PLOT: Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is set during a steampunk-style Industrial Revolution where a deadly virus turns humans into iron-hearted undead called "Kabane," which can only be killed by piercing their steel-protected hearts. Humanity survives in fortress-like stations linked by armored steam trains (called hayajiro). When Ikoma, a young engineer, invents a weapon capable of piercing the Kabane's heart, his home station is attacked. Testing his weapon, he's bitten but resists the infection, becoming a human-Kabane hybrid known as a Kabaneri. Joined by the fierce warrior Mumei, he boards the Iron Fortress train with other survivors to escape and find safety-while fighting off relentless hordes.
