I’ve thought about this situation a lot, having worked in mainstream and now in additional needs I can say mainstream changed a lot with their behaviour systems during my time there and where I now work is a lot more on point. Previously I’ve seen reintegration meetings that haven’t happened and SLT lacking in leadership skills. BUT ( and I’ve been a school parent) parents do need to back off sometimes and allow schools to do their job and support teachers rather than enabling their children to get off doing a detention etc. Like so many things these days there’s too much choice and excuses and I worry about some of these children growing up

I’ve been a TA for the last 14 years and I’m feeling done, drained and looking to get out. Parents who don’t parent, a system that spaffs money everywhere but not where is needed, no consequences for poor behaviour- the list is endless

This system is broken, the staff are broken and the messages the kids are given are broken. Kids can’t breathe at school without a negative connotation. My parents didn’t know I talked in class until parents evening we now know instantly!

Thanks for your positive approach to this and your respect speaking about the school!I was a teacher for 15 years. I loved it and then grew to hate it. Getting rid of certain systems/qualifications and moving to such a homogenous system-trying to fit square pegs into round holes-has just led to a lot of resentment and conflict from both sides. I grew so sick of it all by the end and luckily finally escaped!!

It’s just insane. I don’t think there is any excuse for teachers and schools not to use common sense in a given situation.

Just follow the rules next time? I doubt got a child got a detention for one instance of talking. Teach them to learn and not do it again like most parents?

I work in this area in a secondary school. What you’ve described sounds so wrong to me - they do not seem to be following any proper procedures. Yes it’s tough in schools but it’s thier job to make sure they’re doing things properly in the first place.
