Cotton vs Linen vs Polyester Canvas - Cotton has short fibers and is the least expensive of the three. As a natural material that is hygroscopic, it shrinks and expands with the surrounding humidity, which can weaken paint layers over time. - Linen has long fibers and is 2-3 times stronger than cotton. The natural oils in linen prevent it from becoming brittle over time, but it is also highly hygroscopic. Its hollow fibers absorb and release moisture more quickly than cotton. High quality linen is the classic choice for many artists and is the most expensive of the three. - Polyester is often made with long unbroken strands and is the strongest of the three. As a synthetic fiber that is hydrophobic, it has minimal response to relative humidity. This is why polyester can be so uncomfortable to wear on a hot summer day - it doesn’t breathe like cotton or linen! On the other hand, this also makes it a superb support for paintings. Additional notes: - Poly-blends: Hybrid fabrics like poly-cotton and poly-flax are typically 65% polyester and 35% cotton or linen and are more widely available than 100% polyester though Blick and Artfix have 100% polyester options. - Gesso and primer adhesion: While polyester doesn't rot or stretch with humidity, raw polyester is smooth, non-porous, and requires a high-quality gesso or primer formulated to adhere to the synthetic fibers so the paint doesn't peel over time. - Temperature vs humidity: Polyester may be largely indifferent to humidity, but it is slightly more sensitive to extreme temperature shifts (thermal expansion) compared to natural fibers. That said, in a standard indoor environment, humidity is by far the bigger threat to paintings. - You can minimize the impact of humidity, temperature, and movement by adhering your canvas (or finished painting) to a rigid support such as an ACM panel. #artsupplies #backtoschoolshopping #artistcanvas #canvaspainting #canvasart
