June 25th, 2025: Shortly after taking off from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, American Airlines Flight 1823—an Airbus A321 with 201 people onboard—was forced to shut down its number two engine due to an overheat warning. The flight was en route to Charlotte, North Carolina, when the crew noticed the issue and requested vectors back to Phoenix while working through the emergency checklist. Despite the stress of the situation, the pilots maintained communication with air traffic control and confirmed they were climbing slowly due to the heat and performance limitations. As the situation progressed, ATC issued a low altitude alert while coordinating with the flight crew, who soon declared an emergency. The pilots reported their intentions to make an overweight landing back at Phoenix, a decision not taken lightly given the potential risks involved. With 37,100 pounds of fuel still onboard, the A321 approached Phoenix Runway 8, where emergency crews were standing by for inspection upon landing. Thanks to the professionalism of the flight crew and air traffic control, the aircraft landed safely and taxied off the runway without further incident. Emergency services inspected the aircraft as a precaution, and no injuries were reported. The same aircraft, registration N161UW, was cleared for service and returned to operation just two days later on June 27, 2025.
