@bratbustersparenting: I believe there are four main stages of parenting and the fourth stage is 13 years and older. This is what I consider to be the teen stage. From my experience this is when you want to start letting go and letting them make more mistakes. Here are my top five tips for parenting teenagers: 1️⃣ Listen to understand and show empathy. Do not listen to gather information to lecture with or they will shut you out. They will ask for your advice if they want it. 2️⃣ Negotiate as much as possible with teenagers. It could look like this … I want you to put your dirty clothes in the hamper from now on … what would you like to see from me? 3️⃣ Do not sweat the small stuff with teenagers. If they do something stupid and it is not a big deal then I would let it go. Allow them to make mistakes just like you did and just like you do. If you are always micromanaging and criticizing them I don’t believe it will make them feel great. 4️⃣ Do not leverage the good times to discuss the bad times. From my experience there is no point in rehashing past negative experiences. 5️⃣ You can be a right fighter or you can be happy. If you are arguing with your teenager you are not a calm leader. Even if you are right … do not fight with them. No one wins in an argument with a teenager. Remember … it’s about giving respect to get it. P.S. Did you know I have a parenting podcast? Any advice for teens who are putting every disagreement into chatgpt which simply validates them (bc chatgpt is a mirror), and gives them a lot of psych speak that they then retort back to me 🙏🏻 i tried showing her how our chatgpts give us diff answers bc theyre both just taking our sides, but she keeps doing it and believing chatgpt sos

My daughter asked for pizza tonight. I said I will get you pizza if you watch a movie with me. She said she will starve tonight instead. I tried to negotiate!

I'm in this strange place where I feel so deeply connected to my teenage self. I can remember exactly how I felt in certain moments with my parents, how BADLY I wanted to be heard, not controlled. Now that I’m a parent, I want to do things differently. But then my kids “talk back,”and I get triggered. Even though I KNOW they’re not trying to be rude, my brain still flips into that old programming I was raised with: “I’m the adult, that’s why,” or “Don’t talk back.” It’s frustrating because my heart TRULY understands them, but my nervous system reacts before I can catch myself. I hate that sometimes I end up mimicking my parents, especially knowing how much it hurt me back then. I don’t want to keep repeating that cycle. What are some ways to prevent that and change those aspectsof myself? We have SO little time with them & I want to positively utilize EVERY moment. ❤️

I started these methods with my last 2 kids, learned by trial and error. my first 2 were so stressful, lots of fights and power struggles. with my second 2, we're like best friends they are honor roll students, work hard at their jobs, spend all their time with me instead of in their room. we never fight, just mutual respect. it's amazing

My dad used to tell me to keep making mistakes now, because when you get older the stakes will be higher. Learn from your mistakes now.

My teenager is highly independent but sometimes a level 5 clinger who wants to be to no more than 1 ft away from me a tell me everything. I had a horrible relationship with my mom as a teen so everyday is uncharted territory but I love it!

Solid advice, as always. I really enjoyed the teen years. It was clear they’d be moving on to their adult lives soon & I welcomed the late night conversations.

I love your energy however I loathe these years. I am not happy with them at all. This does not bring me joy. Every time we turn around they’re doing some garbage that validates our concerns …I have no trust in these kids. Living with people you don’t trust? Kind of my worst nightmare.
