@southernadventures___: The only reason I even started thinking about this was because I’ve got cable rails on the way for the whole treehouse and I was wondering if there was anything I needed to do to prepare for them, and then it clicked. stain the top of frame and beam with solid stain. Will be sufficient. sun can't get to stain on frame so will last longer

could paint all the wood in motor oil, it's like oil treating however it is toxic to microorganisms and bugs ie termites. waste oil gives a darker tone

Tbh it’s just an issue that can’t be resolved. Inevitably they will wear and rot faster than the rest of the house and it’s explicitly a design flaw.

do the thing where you essentially create scooped plastic channels between each joist that run to the edge of the deck to prevent water from reaching the beams at all

If it’s yellowwood you’re probably alright. I have had problems with Lowe’s treated wood rotting within 5 years.
