Those who say we cannot pray to the Mother of God ignore centuries of Christian faith and what Scripture itself testifies about her. The angel Gabriel calls her “full of grace” (Luke 1:28), and Elizabeth, “blessed among women” (Luke 1:42). Mary is not “an ordinary woman,” but the Mother of God, the Theotokos, and the Church honors her precisely because God honored her first. We do not pray to the Mother of God as to God, but we call upon her to pray for us—as we ask any saint to intercede. Just as in life we ask others to pray for us, how much more can we ask the intercession of the purest and holiest human being who ever lived. At the wedding in Cana, she did not perform the miracle—but she said, “Do whatever he tells you”—and Jesus obeyed. If her intercession mattered then, how much more so now, in heaven, when she is “more honorable than the cherubim and more exalted beyond compare than the seraphim.”
