There’s a huge difference between a unity and a personal career growth. I disagree with the notion that David Mabuza was genuinely committed to unity. His advocacy for unity seemed more like a means to further his personal career growth. Mabuza's unity campaign, where he encouraged ANC members to vote for unity rather than specific presidential candidates, appeared to be a strategic move to gain leverage with both frontrunners, Cyril Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. The price of unity for Mabuza likely included securing support for his own political ambitions. However, this strategy ultimately backfired, leading to his resignation as Deputy President. After failing to secure adequate support for his presidential bid at the ANC's 55th National Conference, Mabuza declined to stand for re-election as ANC Deputy President, paving the way for Paul Mashatile to take over.
