You know what really hit me here? The fact that Islam came to Africa through letters and scholars not war. These kings weren’t forced. They were invited. And they chose it for what it brought: law, literacy, trade, connection. As a Cape Malay, our Islam came through scholars and books too, not violence. So it’s powerful to see that West Africans also had dignity and choice in their story. We were shaping history not just watching it happen

Can one be Muslim but still practice africa spirituality? By looking at your post one would come to the conclusion that in regions where the Muslim religion came and was adopted, african culture (history, spirituality etc) was eroded and thus his point still stands from the point of african spirituality. Just because people were persuaded and not forcefully converted the outcome is still the same.

What is traditional African spirituality though, I have heard this too and I am not sure where it comes from. Was the religion embraced or imposed as better than what already existed? I encourage you look into his videos and he speaks from an African perspective. He has nuggets of wisdom in his way of teaching

I think there’s pros and cons - you looking at it from your perspective, he probably looking at it from his perspective. It’s well documented how the spread of Islam disrupted traditional belief systems ie The Sokoto Caliphate Jihads (1804-1808) Ngoma inorira ichiti pangu-pangu

Love Maponga he channeled a lot for us as African to learn about Africa history not the one of the mainstream. This history was never articulated in this factual manner with elaboration of explanation; being under Western colonialism has wired our way of thinking other ways. We are only now unlearning its historical implanting

I don't have any concerns with the Muslim religion, part of my family is also Muslim but I have been bullied in workplaces because I am not Muslim that I had to very quietly move out of a department to avoid being blocked from moving. I think that's more the way it's practiced in certain areas and spaces and not necessarily an issue with the religion it's self. Because if u read the Quraan they have a huge respect for women and for other religions.

You're right, the vast majority of Muslims in Africa today are descendants of people who embraced Islam voluntarily over centuries, often through the incredible work of African Muslim scholars, traders, and Sufi orders. When discussing how Islam arrived and became established in different parts of Africa, the picture is multifaceted. While peaceful means dominated south of the Sahara for centuries, the initial entry into North Africa was tied to the early Arab conquests. This political conquest changed the ruling structure and, over generations, influenced the religious landscape --- even if individual conversions remained based on conviction, social integration, or perceived benefit under the new rule. So, while the faith itself requires voluntary submission, the historical process of its large--scale establishment in some regions involved political power alongside preaching and trade.
