The tragedy of Karbala is not merely a historical footnote; it is the very crucible in which the soul of Islam was preserved. On the 10th of Muharram, Ashura, Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the beloved grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, stood not for political ambition but to safeguard the very essence of Islam from tyranny, falsehood, and moral decay under Yazid’s corrupt regime. Yet history bears witness to one of the greatest injustices: while Imam Hussain sacrificed his life alongside 72 loyal companions, his family imprisoned, his womenfolk unveiled and paraded through the streets, the oppressors sought to erase this seismic event from the memory of the ummah. In a perverse twist of fate, the very day that should have become one of the most somber days in Islamic consciousness was instead turned into a day of joy and fasting among many Sunni circles, based on a narration that Jews fasted on this day for the deliverance of Musa (AS), and the Prophet ﷺ, in Medina, endorsed fasting to distinguish Muslims. However, how could the Prophet, who declared “Hussain is from me, and I am from Hussain,” ever endorse fasting in celebration on the very day his own flesh and blood was mercilessly butchered? Would any grandfather rejoice on the martyrdom of his beloved grandson? The distortion was not accidental; it was systemic, engineered by the Umayyad dynasty to obscure their crime and reframe Ashura as a day of celebration, diverting the ummah from the truth of Karbala. This suppression was so effective that generations grew up unaware that this day carries the blood of the Prophet’s own progeny. To call it a “blessed day” is not only a historical oversight, it is a spiritual blindness to the greatest stand for divine justice, truth, and human dignity. Imam Hussain did not die to be forgotten; he died so Islam would not be reshaped into the image of Yazid. Thus, to ignore Karbala is to ignore the very spirit of the Prophet’s mission, and to fast in joy on Ashura is to stand unknowingly with the silence of those who tried to bury the truth in the sands of Karbala, but the blood of the martyrs cries out still, for those with ears to hear and hearts to awaken.
