I’ve never heard the French R explained that way and yet immediately understood and could feel the difference. I’m probably still wrong, but maybe I’m less wrong now.

Not to mention, certain idiosyncrasies of our native languages (like the order of adjectives in English) literally just come naturally without anyone ever explaining it to us.

I once told a friend that all she had to do to perfect my native regional accent was to “just relax your mouth completely” and she said, “no, that’s how YOU can do your accent, that doesn’t work for a nonnative!”

I'm a smart person and good at learning words and better than average at English grammar. But I could not wrap my head around the technical descriptions of grammar, and struggled with learning other languages (vocab and pronunciation are doable, but not conjugation and the finer points of fluency). Pick the stuff up naturally through immersion but not study

Truth! I was trying to explain the Pittsburgh o sound the other day. Could. Not. Do. It. But I can make the sound.

A tangential comment about this observation: “We can do the thing brilliantly but we can’t tell you the thing that we’re doing”. As an Indian immigrant to the US who was fluent at near native levels before I landed, I ran into an unexpected problem here. The way I said some words seemed to confuse the locals. So I started doing the thing that one doesn’t nominally do: think about the thing I was doing even as I was doing it, consciously altering my pronunciation, often simply switching out words on the fly to make myself more comprehensible. This would make me stumble over my words, sometimes making things worse. (This is not the same as thinking in one language and speaking another.) Has this phenomenon been studied? Does it have a name?

you're thinking of a sorcerer. wizards study magic to master it, sorcerers manifest it innately

Such a cool and accurate depiction of human speech. As a speech pathologist and professor for many years, I was continually astounded by the complexity and brilliance of human verbal communication. Forever fascinating.
