a lot of writers make their characters orphans, so the parent question might be a bit of a roadblock. But it's still an important question. Did they have anyone to take care of them? What was their relationship to that person? If not, how did they manage to survive on their own? Did they become a theif? Did they forage for food, hunt animals? Upbringing is very important for characters, because it's what shapes them and how they think and view the world.
