I genuinely believe her mother had to have known SOMETHING was up. Bc disappearing into the cellar for whole nights after her daughter disappeared? Nah, I would be suspicious. Especially if I’m being told to not go into the basement of my own HOUSE.

She knew. She just didn’t want to deal with it, also he abused the wife and child upset horribly too so it’s very possible she was scared he would hurt her and the upstairs children if she did anything

The mom could go into the basement. It was rooms hidden behind walls ,crawl spaces you wouldn’t think of , fake doors . He hid it all in plain sight

I watched a video about this about a person talking about it and they said the reason why the Mother didn’t know or think anything of it because the Dad would beat them if they ever questioned his authority or anything so the mother would believe him because he told them that he was just building something cause you know back in the day most people would have bunkers or anything and stuff so she believed that he was building a bunker and that she didn’t think anything of it
