My mother told me there must be something wrong with me because I was so confrontational all the time, back when I lived with my parents. Then I moved on my own and realised that it’s natural to be angry when other people micromanage my life; make every decision for me without consulting or telling me about it, and act like every differing opinion I have is a violation of their unsaid rules, all the while being told that I’m the problem.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized I’m not as “angry and negative” as I was always told. I’m actually quite patient and optimistic. I never want my daughter to have to come to that realization as an adult.

As a teenager my mother would call me an ‘emotionally abusive teenager’ who abused them. I thought my brain was broken. As an adult who never feels that level of anger, and who was raised by an angry, crying, screaming mother. I now see I was merely repeating the behaviour I was taught. My mother’s ceiling is my floor. No one will ever be a punching bag or sponge for my traumas, especially not a child who had no choice in being here.

my parents came to visit during uni, & for the whole week I became my old angry self. the moment they left I realised it wasn't me all this time, it was just the house I was raised in.
