@cast_iron_chris: Ancestral Fallacy: The mistaken belief that something is better or more correct simply because it’s how people did it in the past. ‘But that’s how my granddaddy did it!’ My grandmother (bless her heart) used to pronounce diarrhea as ‘dia-rear’ so I didn’t take everything she said as the gospel.
We used lye before, which strips the seasoning. We don’t anymore.

Soap was only bad because it was made with lye. Modern soap is fine to use.

hi I'm a culinary student; we wash our cast iron with non-lye soap. rinse it after and dry it well, then re-season with a fat (preferably not a liquid), wipe off excess, put away. you're actually risking contamination if you don't, especially if you cook for someone with allergies.

You all do realize that heat sterilizes right? It disinfects better than the best soap.

I don’t know what my ancestors did. Wasn’t there. But I wash my dirty dishes. Then season cast iron with oil before putting up.

its more that cast iron is more porous than most other metals so it'll absorb chemicals from dish soap or sani water and leave a white chemical residue that'll tear your stomach up.

A lodge scraper and if you dont have one then hot water, salt, and a bit of oil. Using soap and water is fine if you season regularly but I find my scraper with salt and hot water works just fine.
