@theobserveruk: Penniless and homeless, Raynor and Moth Winn found fame and fortune with The Salt Path: the “true” story of their 630-mile walk to salvation. It became a global bestseller, selling over 2 million copies, and in 2025 it was adapted into a major film. It was a heartwarming story of perseverance and hope. But we can reveal the couple’s tale of endurance was far from the truth. Ros Hemmings, who was friends with the couple more than two decades ago, says that the story told in The Salt Path makes her ‘feel sick’. She knew them then by their real names – Sally and Tim Walker. And the story she remembers is different from the one that’s been sold to the world. Read the full investigation on our website. It was obvious in the book, none of their claims made sense and their finances didn't add up.

The truth should be told. They stole from friends. Everyone they left behind knows it. Shocking. The truth will always come out in the end. Shame on them, let’s hope they repay those they left behind. Thieves and con woman. We see them.

Interesting. I started the book but couldn’t get past the start where they were evicted, and had a sense that they owed the money and were a pair of scrounging hippies.

People are utterly dreadful. I hope Ros Hemmings finds some peace and comfort now that this has been exposed.

I have never read 'The Saltpath' but have just finished reading her other book 'Landlines' as part of a book club. The whole way through their story felt disingenuous and I couldn't believe the ending. It's possibly one of the most dangerous books I've read. I can't imagine how people who have Moth's disease might react to the book's claims that walking a thousand miles could cure them like it did Moth. They come across as rude, entitled and dishonest. It makes sense that they have lied.

Literally yelled out loud when I saw this video - just read the book and found so many discrepancies and was quite alarmed by her behaviour. I knew it didn’t add up! Well done on this investigation!!

As someone who has two separate neurological conditions, I was suspicious of the story that the husband could walk that far and live by camping. Never read the book so can’t say for sure but this article was affirming. Esp. for the toxic disability inspiration aspect which is harmful to disabled people (eg, “why can’t you just try harder like X? Look at what they’ve achieved!”)

I enjoyed the book but the 'character' was awful, I wondered why someone would write themselves as so unlikeable. What I don't understand is why the publisher's didn't fact check her claims?

worst book I've ever read! Seemed disingenuous throughout and angered me that it portrayed that it's possible to get rid of horrible illnesses by starving and walking

the wandered around Cornwall stealing off local businesses too. They had no problem in putting that in their book. The sense of entitlement in their books is nauseating

It all just came to easily to them. There was no reflection on how their experience of ‘homelessness’ was privelleged as they are middle class presenting. Now this makes me think that lack of consideration wasn’t lack of reflection but because it’s simply not true…
