My Love Affair with the South When I first dipped my toes into the Low Country, I started in New Orleans. One of my dearest friends lived there, and that’s where the rabbit hole began. I had never seen buildings like the ones in the Bywater — BRIGHTLY painted and unapologetic. Jasmine literally hung in the air, wrapping itself around you as you walked. Bars tucked away in courtyards with secret passwords. And the culture — oh my lord. It’s in the walls, the streets, the music, the food. I’ve never felt anything like it anywhere else. And the people? Salt of the earth. Kind. Chatty. Always willing to help a neighbor. It’s where I learned to eat my first crawfish, and I’ve been in love ever since. From there, I headed east: Mississippi, Alabama (Buc-ee’s anyone?), the Floribama line and some good old red dirt dust and finally, my happy place. The Gulf Coast. I grew up with glacial runoff yall so water so cold it hurts when you get in. But the Gulf? Clear, warm, and endlessly inviting. And that sand. Ohhhh LORD THAT SAND, it’s different. It’s made almost entirely of quartz, carried down from the Appalachian Mountains thousands of years ago, which is why it’s so soft and blindingly white it squeaks under your feet. The food is fire, the fishing is endless, and the fish never stop biting. I could cast all day long and never get bored. My souls belongs there. My heart is stuck there. This sound, this feeling, this whole vibe it belongs to the South. And every time I leave, I’m already thinking about when I get to go home again. The sound is toooo good I couldn’t help myself but use it 2x #southern #lowcountry
