The United States pursued a policy of isolation, but German unrestricted submarine warfare sank American ships heading to Britain. However, the United States held back until this point, when the German Empire sent the Zimmermann Telegram to the United Mexican States. The Zimmermann Telegram stated that if Germany and Mexico attacked and defeated the United States, half of the American territory would be given to them. Britain found out about this and entered the war.
