That's still the unspoken standard even now. If that pratice was flipped by others, they'd have a problem with being excluded. Its suddenly racist. Yet they'd say make your own stuff, not reboots. Yet, they wont watch that either unless they want to feel "inclusive." The 90s watching habits of Living Single and Friends hasn't changed for many.

It’s never surprising but always telling how they make every effort to center themselves. I’m Latino and grew up on Black tv shows. And yeah YT shows always had kids with crazy attitudes. That person jumped to a false equivalence instead of actually engaging with the critique of the negative influence.
