Read here for the explanation of each composition in this video: 1. NEGATIVE SPACE: This is always a nice composition, it feels very painterly. This is where you have the subject isolated with lots of minimalistic space surrounding it, such as the sky or water like this shot. This is a powerful composition because it creates simplistic clarity. 2. SPLIT FOCUS SYMMETRY: In this example I’ve explained it by having 2 subjects that are similar in size reflected, however one is in focus and the other is not. Therefore it’s a natural rule of thirds composition but with more intention and guiding your eye to look at what’s in focus. 3. THE LAYERED TRI-ZONE: This is an interesting one and you can see it everywhere but sometimes it’s difficult to capture. For this shot you only need three things; Foreground, the subject and the background. I have shown this from left to right, you could also do this from top to bottom and visa-versa. 4. DIAGONAL LEADING LINE: In my last composition video i showed the traditional leading lines going to the centre. But for this shot it’s more about the depth of the road coming towards you. I think this shot is elevated by the sunset shining onto the road and buildings, adding an extra layer of depth. 5. FRAMING WITH DEPTH: Again, in my last composition video I showed the simple framing shot. The difference here is that there is more interest and depth created because it’s shot in a tunnel, which means there are natural leading lines. I particularly love this shot with the person cycling through with their light on, highlighting the tunnel! Of course these are guide lines and examples of some techniques that you can look out for when filming. However remember you can also break the rules and find new creative compositions!
