This is almost an ethical question. I think the answer is neither. Appropriate and supportive leaders foster good service when it exists. Keeping people shamed seems bad for mental health? But so is complacency.

My lens believes its due to the US being a very young country (249yrs), and the absence of a homogeneous culture/values. Japan is an ancient country with a culture/value system anchored in collectivism. US is anchored in individualism.

I think it’s lack of moral character. This is taught in the home by parents. I think it’s sadly a reflection of the decline of moral ethics in society.

Also, I believe it has to do with the increase of substance abuse. Children of drug users have been known to show no empathy. I find this scary…considering the increased drug and alcohol use. It can lead to the decay of a society. No empathy leads to not caring which can lead to lack of humanity.
