This was a real sign posted at the edge of towns across America: > “N*****—Don’t let the sun set on you here.” They were called sundown towns—places where Black people were forced to leave by nightfall under threat of arrest, assault, or lynching. Most white people have never been taught about them. But there were thousands. Not just in the South. In Oklahoma. In Indiana. In Oregon. In Illinois. Sometimes there were signs. Sometimes there were sirens. Sometimes there were police checkpoints. And sometimes there was just silence—because everyone already knew who wasn’t welcome. --- These towns weren’t white by accident.
