@kelliesnider.art: This was not a movie prop. This was a real sign posted at the edge of towns across America: > “N*****—Don’t let the sun set on you here.” They were called sundown towns—places where Black people were forced to leave by nightfall under threat of arrest, assault, or lynching. Most white people have never been taught about them. But there were thousands. Not just in the South. In Oklahoma. In Indiana. In Oregon. In Illinois. Sometimes there were signs. Sometimes there were sirens. Sometimes there were police checkpoints. And sometimes there was just silence—because everyone already knew who wasn’t welcome. --- These towns weren’t white by accident. They were white by design. If your town was always white and no one ever explained why— Now’s the time to ask. --- 🔍 Sources: James W. Yes ma’am me and my sister live in Ponca City in 87. We went to Blackwell to Walmart and we knew we needed to leave before sun down. We left as the sun was going down and received an escort out of town.

I never stopped for gas or snacks when traveling near Ponca City or Blackwell. To this day, still don’t. Parts of Texas I will never travel through. Sundown cities are REAL — to this very day.

A young black man has gone missing recently from Ponca City. I can only imagine the horrible outcome if he is ever found.

I feel like maybe only white truck drivers should deliver to such sad town since you need your goods and you don’t like black folks. And no, I’m not speaking about you. I’m speaking about the towns.

I remember being at my grandparents house in the summer time in the 80’s and 90’s in Opelousas La. White people would not touch our hands in church. SMH

I'm from Wichita Falls TX, and my mom told me about the signs when I was 6. I commented on another video that the sign was still up in Bowie, TX until then 90s. My ancestors were def complicit.

I tell my man all the time… I’m a brown latina woman… He does not get it. I have Afro Latin in my family and this scares me.
