We are conditioned to think this way through high school, college, med school, residency, fellowship. It’s always thinking about the next thing. Definitely frustrating and a difficult cycle to break!

Congratulations! You deserve to relax and do nothing! But if you’re like me and need to do more here are some things I did last year when I finished fellowship and/or things I wish I did to channel that noise into something positive (I know I’m a derm so have been through nothing close to what you’ve done but maybe it’ll help): connect back with family and friends, reflect - think of all you’ve accomplished and critically think where you want to be, read some good books (I read a lot on business development and some inspiring “self help” books), try out a new hobby (took a standup comedy class during fellowship and loved it), start a business, network with people (reach out to someone you admire and see if they’ll give you advice), thank your mentors and check in with them, write.

I’m definitely like this. I learned through lots of therapy it’s not normal to be constantly on. I have had to come wayyyyy down as I started my practice, and quit 2 other jobs. Golf helps quiet things for me. So does scuba diving.

You know doubt have great mindfulness while performing your craft, staying present in that moment and focusing just on the task at hand. So now Sir the trick is to integrate that same relentless diligence you exhibit while at work into your every moment not just the ones you feel are most important. The presence is always the most important which is why we most always try to cultivate mindfulness 🫶🏻

it'll take you a week or two before your mind starts thinking of enjoying your time off. I had to go through an emergency surgery and was still thinking about work and feeling guilty not going to work and help. 2 weeks later it started to change lol

I started going to the gym longer. Planning hiking trips. Lists for bars, coffee, and restaurants. Learning the violin and piano. Had the same problem when I finished school. Now I’m looking up certifications 😂.

Check out the book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman. It’s a great story and also might answer some of your questions.
