The most tragic aspect of Subaru's life is that he can never truly move on from his trauma. When someone dies, most people are allowed to grieve and heal. Subaru is denied even that. He watches friends, allies, and loved ones suffer gruesome deaths over and over again, only for time to reset. The people he saves never remember being saved. The people who comfort him never remember comforting him. The bonds he forms can be erased instantly by a single failed timeline. Subaru alone bears the emotional scars of countless realities that no longer exist. Adding to his suffering is the fact that he cannot freely tell anyone about Return by Death. Whenever he attempts to reveal the truth, a terrifying force prevents him from doing so. This leaves him isolated in a way few characters ever experience. He carries unimaginable trauma while being unable to explain why he is suffering. To everyone else, he often appears irrational, emotional, or unstable because they cannot see the horrors he has witnessed. As a result, he is frequently misunderstood by the very people he is trying to protect. Subaru's deaths are also unusually brutal. He is stabbed, disemboweled, frozen alive, crushed, devoured, and tortured throughout his journey. Unlike many fictional characters who die once, Subaru experiences death repeatedly while fully conscious of the pain. He knows exactly what is coming, yet he often chooses to face it anyway if it means saving someone else. Every death leaves psychological damage, creating layers of fear, anxiety, and despair that continue to accumulate over time. His tragedy is intensified by his own flaws.
