dude no body talks about this I've only been for 6 months I'm about to buy a grooming shop and when I tell you my grooms are completely sub par but the fact that I work with these pups to make sure they happy and comfortable and have a groom that suits their needs physically and their owners lifestyle makes it work. People's obsession with the aesthetics of their dogs coats is absolutely ridiculous. I think this needs to be top priority not only for owners but groomers!

Meanwhile…. If we bring the table out, my poodles jump on it before I’m even ready to start their grooms 😅 it was the first thing we focused on, being happy while being handled and groomed!

This 👏 We need to focus more on dog behavior and psychology. The cuts mean nothing when we aren’t concerned about the mind first! Too many know nothing about these things, or proper handling techniques.

I'm so glad to hear someone else say this. Yes I love to create beautiful grooms, I compete, I color, etc. But I'm horrified at the number of groomers who don't even learn basic anatomy and physiology and make the dogs on the table so much more uncomfortable than they ever need to be. I don't think it's a flex when people groom 10 to 15 dogs a day just busting out grooms as fast as possible without any concern to how moving at that pace stresses the dog

I'm not crying...I swear! I was in Training & Behaviour for almost 30 years before becoming a groomer (I now own my own little business), and my PRIMARY concern was the insanely high number of dogs who are forced through services to please the owners. I now have a hand selected client list and closed books. All of my clients understand my values, and after a YEAR of working with most of my dogs, I'm seeing a reduction in stress.

I’ve been grooming for 25 years. I’ve said this for most of my career. I strive for clean, comfortable happy and cute. You won’t find me painting, toenails or coloring, etc. If that’s what you’re looking for the groomers are out there for that. I have 450 dogs on my reoccurring schedule coming in anywhere between 4 to 10 weeks repeating. I have no computer system. I have no file system. I know every wart lump quirk, personality and behavior on these dogs. It’s like a big giant family and that has been the success of my business. No stress on perfection but deep connection. My dogs and my people trust me 100%. It makes the job so much more enjoyable.

This is why great communication with clients is vital. I’m not going to ask a dog to stand for a 3 hour groom to satisfy clients ‘wants’, if the dog will cope better with a style that takes 1/2 that time.

THIS! This matters so much! When I went solo, I recognized how I had been stressing my client dogs out. I stepped back and changed how I work with them. Change how I moved them and what I asked them to do. And I tell my clients the dog dictates the appointment, not their desires or mine. The grooms improve as the dog gets comfortable and learns it wants to work with you ❤️

Over 20 years grooming and have always tried to do as stress free as possible. One on one home setting, quiet, slow. It doesn’t work for everyone, I don’t make a whole lot but I feel more relaxed and they are more relaxed.

Learning how to understand the dog is the hardest part of grooming. Anyone can take a pair of clippers to a dog however few can handle the dog and keep them calm and happy. .
