🏰🚁 18 historic cannons have been airlifted from the battlements of St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall! Perched high above the Cornish coastline, the medieval castle of St Michael’s Mount has witnessed centuries of English history, from medieval sieges to the English Civil War. For generations, historic cast iron cannons have stood along the castle’s defensive walls, overlooking Mount’s Bay and the waters below. Dating back to around the reign of King George II in the 18th century, these impressive pieces of artillery are a reminder of the Mount’s military past. On 14 October 2026, the Royal Navy undertook an extraordinary operation to remove 18 of these historic cannons for specialist restoration. Using a Merlin Mk2 helicopter from 814 Naval Air Squadron, based at RNAS Culdrose, crews carefully lifted the cannons from the island fortress and transported them to the mainland. Each cannon weighs between 350kg and 700kg, making this a remarkable feat of precision flying. The operation, known as Operation Cormoran’s Throw, provided valuable training for Royal Navy crews while helping to preserve an important part of Britain's castle heritage. The cannons will now undergo conservation and repair before returning to their historic home in spring 2027, where they will once again stand guard above the Cornish sea. A wonderful example of modern military expertise helping to protect Britain's historic castles for future generations. 🇬🇧 🎥 Footage credits: stmichaelsmount (Instagram) and Cornwallukadventures Graham (Facebook). #StMichaelsMount #Cornwall #RoyalNavy #BritishHistory #CastlesOfEngland
