Your uncertainties, doubts, and scary thoughts aren’t the problem. The problem arises when you start to interpret these thoughts or experiences as being *significant* somehow. You do this by taking responsibility for these experiences, by interpreting them as immediately true, by catastrophizing, by overestimating the probability of this bad thing happening, wanting to get rid of the thoughts, and so much more. This interpretation is what leads everything to go haywire. This interpretation causes anxiety in your mind and body. Naturally, this feels super uncomfortable and you feel the need to fix it and to do SOMETHING. That leads you to want to do safety behaviors, rituals, or compulsive acts as a way to reduce the anxiety that you feel from these misinterpretations. You’ll probably feel some temporary relief from engaging in these behaviors right there in the moment. But there are MAJOR problems with this kind of response. By giving into these safety behaviors, you negatively reinforce the obsession/fear for next time. You basically reinforce to your brain that this was an emergency in the first place. If you keep giving into this cycle by responding with rituals, you will have more anxiety next time and your world will get smaller and smaller. You will need more rituals to stay afloat. What this means is that we have to resist those ritualistic behaviors first and foremost in order to break this cycle. It will feel scary. But eventually, when you stop feeding the beast, it will starve and die. So next time you feel tempted to give into compulsions, keep in mind what damage you may be doing for the next time. Try to be willing to resist the ritual, and instead let yourself be anxious so that you can work to starve the beast. I go over this in SO MUCH MORE DETAIL in my “OCD/Anxiety Cycle” Masterclass. Just DM me or comment with the word “CYCLE” and I’ll send you some info! Annndd pro tip: You may wanna grab this masterclass soon because you won’t be able to get it after 9/19. Ya heard it here first. #MentalHealthAwareness #pinitformentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #anxietyattack #obsessivecompulsivedisorder
