@outwithafinn: Using a firesteel: How to get a fire going? This was my first time igniting plain firewood with a firesteel. I usually use vaseline & cotton or bark from brich. But this time it was just wood. How? First I made very thin feathers to a stick, and a bunch of additional feather sticks to immediately feed the fire when I got it going. I noticed that the best way to get the sparks to the feathers without breaking the feathers is to put the fire steel against the stick on top of the feathers.
