Brock and I met when we were little kids. If you can believe it, I was taller than him back then, just enough to lord it over him for the blink of an eye it took for him to grow into the size of a college linebacker. We grew up, went our own ways, and then circled back to each other the way things meant for you always do—even if they take the long way home. We started dating after college, packed our whole life into an old SUV and drove West with out much of a plan except to enjoy Brocks final year of football and for me to finish writing a graduate dissertation. We spent our first year back packing through the Sawtooth mountains and sleeping under stars that made the whole valley shine bright blue. We made lifelong friends and learned just enough about marriage to realize we knew nothing of marriage. Then life, as it does, showed up with a baby in one hand and a curveball in the other. We sold our house and moved to a town that had never heard of us. I gave up a big career so I could raise our babies the way I was raised—at home, where I knew they would be loved the most. We landed in a tidy little suburb where every third house looked like the last, where the yards were trimmed but the roots didn’t run deep. Brock had steady work, we had plenty of food on the table and we were grateful for it—but something in us went hungry just the same. We didn’t want just a house surrounded by neighbors we didn’t know and the sterile comfort of suburbia that eats you alive. We wanted land that would outlive us. A place our kids could grow up free and yet grounded, where their childhood would be more creeks and climbing trees and hard work on the land than parking lots and tv screens. The East started tugging at us. The creeks and red dirt and thick woods of our childhood called us by name. We didn’t want more square footage or a fancier car. We wanted land that could outlive us, a patch of earth our kids could run barefoot across, and later—God willing—raise their own babies on. We wanted a life that left dirt under our nails and something good in our bones. So we scraped and saved, made do and did without. We gave up a lot. But we were aiming at something that would last. We knew Piney Fork was ours the minute we saw it. Fifty-seven acres of stubborn Appalachian hills with an old house that leans a little but settles in around us like a quilt. Now the work begins. We’re not just patching walls or planting gardens—we’re trying to build a life that’ll mean something. For our kids. And their kids.
