Rugby is a faster paced less structured game with fewer stoppages, more emphasis on continuous play & rucks/mauls. Rugby players might be similar in size & build to a NFL linebacker, but not necessarily a lineman. Rugby players often get cauliflower ears, which can easily occur in scrum conditions. Now whether or not rugby is tougher than American football is subjective, but many argue that rugby is more physically demanding due to its constant contact & lack of breaks, despite AF players hitting harder due to paddling. Rugby has h-shaped goalposts, a wider oval ball & a larger playing field. Rugby has limited substitutions & requires grounding the ball in the endzone, while AF involves catching the ball in the end zone. In rugby forward passes are illegal except when kicked, while AF allows 1 forward pass per play. AF has 11 players, rugby union has 15 players, rugby league has 13 players. Rugby 10s, 7s, touch & beach rugby also exist. Rugby players, especially backs, often have a leaner more athletic build due to the constant running & high intensity play. Ultimately both sports require a high level of athleticism, strength & mental toughness. The next women's world cup will be hosted in England from 8-22-2025 to 9-27-2025 featuring 16 teams. The subsequent men's rugby world cup will be held in Australia 2027.
