Kamala Harris had a plan for home nursing to be covered by Medicare. That would have helped so many families like yours and mine.

this is insane. no one is paying 10k/month for me to be babysat until I die. I will be checking out on my own terms. its insane we will do this for animals but humans must live it out 😭

Also move assets out of your parents name. If they qualify or you want them on Medicaid they will make them liquid all their assets for their care. Medicaid goes back 10 years on assets

this is part of why we have to advocate for universal healthcare. this should be paid for by our taxes

At your age, go get long term care insurance. The younger you are, the cheaper it is. With the cuts to Medicaid and other medical services being cut, you’re going to need it.

Get everything out of their name and into an irrevocable trust. Thennnn it looks like they have no assets and they can quickly qualify for Medicaid!

After the five years your Dads money running out, then Medicaid pays for it, but you have to go through all of your parents assets first.

For myself, I would choose death with dignity. We are all going to die eventually, I don't want my family going into debt to watch me waste away.

Buy non-term life insurance in your 20’s. Even if it’s not a huge policy. It will be much cheaper

Can’t get good ltc insurance now - because they lost money on it. I’m early sixties now, priced it more than a decade ago, only paid about $200k, with monthly limits. Term life makes sense if you have family history

In late 2021 my Dad was diagnosed with early onset dementia followed by a massive debilitating stroke a few months later, and had to be placed in a SNF for a while. The hospital coordinator asked me if he had long term care insurance and I'd never even heard of the term. He's at home now and we are *just* getting by, but I had to put my own life and career on hold to care for his needs.

Yup. My MIL sold her house, had a pension, social security and had VA benefits—this covered 50% for 5 years. The rest was our financial responsibility. Timeline was similar to yours.

Hospice has been wonderful for us and it’s not just for people that will die within 6 months anymore. They put my mom on hospice under failure to thrive and they cover all her meds, incontinent care, hospital beds, etc.

My mother in law had long term care insurance. To use it you have to pay out of pocket for 90 days. And they only cover so much per month. It was a total scam. She paid 12,000 and got nothing out of it.

After my grandmother had Alzheimer’s, I made my mom get LTC insurance when she was in her 50s. FF 25 years and mom had dementia too…. It covered $456,000 for just over 4 years in memory care. We figured she paid into it $170k over those 25 years…. So $286,000 covered beyond premium. We never could have afforded the memory care without it.

My dad got cancer at 67 (GBM) and died at 70. They never had the chance to enjoy their savings. But now with a mom with dementia - we have funds to pay for her care. A curse and a blessing.
