A resting respiratory rate (RRR) is an important tool and ONE way to monitor your dog’s heart and lung health—especially if they have a condition like heart disease. -A normal RRR for a healthy dog at rest or asleep is typically under 30 breaths per minute. 1. To measure it, wait until your dog is completely relaxed or sleeping. Count each rise and fall of the chest as one breath for 30 seconds, then multiply by two. (Shown in video). There are apps that help count too. 2. Be sure not to count panting, as it’s not an accurate indicator of resting breaths. 3. Elevated RRRs over 40 in one minute can be a sign of an issue, especially if your dog has heart disease. 4. If you're seeing that regularly, it's time to call your vet.
