@kristinclark.careercoach: Concerned parents call and say “My kid changed their major again” and “my kid wants to quit college”. The underlying cause is always, because they have no idea what they want to do for a career so they don’t know why they are in college. They don’t have a clear goal. As a parent you will have to help them figure this out because high schools and colleges are not equipped to do this at the level needed for success. #mom #fyp #parents #college #careeradvice
If you don't know what you want to do, you shouldn't go to a university right away I went to community so didn't have alot of debt.I personally changed my major a bunch of times, but I went to community college first, so I didn’t end up with a lot of debt—from engineering to medical to accounting. I started with civil engineering but didn’t do well in calculus, so I switched to try radiologic technology. But rad tech programs are absurdly competitive. The schools near me only accept around 18 to 31 students per year but get between 200 to 400 applications. I knew people who had all A’s in their prerequisites and were applying for the third year in a row without getting in. On top of that, different schools had different prerequisites. So I switched to accounting after getting my associate’s degree, and it ended up going a lot better for me—but it still took me six years to graduate.

Jeferubino :
Agreed, but not always practical since we’re talking about 17-18 year old kids

I agree with what you’re saying, but I think it’s important for kids to not feel pressured into a certain major. I’d rather my child switch majors and discover what makes them happy, rather than them feeling forced into a last decision too early. College is about discovery and trying new things.
