@didyoucatchthis: Jack Nicholson Walked Out of ‘Return of the King’ Early — And Told Elijah Wood Why Backstage at the 2004 Golden Globes, Elijah Wood had a surprising encounter with legendary actor Jack Nicholson — and it was all about the ending of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Wood recalled the moment when Nicholson pulled him aside and started chatting about the film. “He starts talking to me about Lord of the Rings, and he’s like, ‘Did you die?’” Elijah replied, “Well, yeah… it sort of depends on how you look at it,” referring to Frodo’s final journey to the Undying Lands. But Nicholson looked confused. According to Wood, he replied, “What are you talking about? I left a half an hour before that.” That’s when it clicked — Jack never saw the ending. “You didn’t see Frodo getting on the boat?” Elijah asked. “Oh, no,” Nicholson said. “Too many endings, man. Should’ve ended it a lot sooner than that.” Apparently, Jack had left early to go warm up the car for his family — missing what many fans consider one of the most emotional and poetic conclusions in fantasy film history. So… do you agree with Jack? Too many endings? Or was it perfect the way it was? Let us know in the comments.

I will say in the book, the ring gets destroyed like halfway through the ROTK and the second half is them saying bye to each other, traveling, and saving the shire from invaders. so yeah its actually a short ending adaptation wise.

I remember watching it in the theater when it came out. I thought "this is the end" about 9 times.

It was way too long of an ending, and so many needless scenes of them staring deep into each other’s eyes 🙄

The whole series was HOURS long. What do people expect? Of course if they going to try to wrap it all up it’s gonna be long.
