Dingus :
The Chilean Sea Bass scene in Jurassic Park is actually the first sign that Hammond’s “Spared no expense” line was bullshit but it mostly goes over everyone’s head now. At the time Chilean Sea Bass was a cheap fish with a fancy name.

Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides), also known as Chilean sea bass, mero, and icefish

Franky The Kid :
Lee Lantz did start calling it Chilean sea bass in the 1970s because he knew it would sell better, he was an American fish wholesaler, and in 1994 the FDA officially accepted it as an alternative name for toothfish. I don't know why the name was mentioned in Jurassic Park, maybe a coincidence or maybe a strategic marketing campaign 🤷

The name has nothing to do with itself? The Patagonia is part of Chile and Chile is the closest country to Antarctica… 🫠

Not to mention the irony of “Chilean sea bass, spared no expense” cheap fish marketed as expensive. Lazy with the sheen of trying hard. Much like a certain fictional theme park

So funny, I never order “tilapia” in the US because it’s not actual tilapia. Elsewhere in the world, it’s a WHOLE other fish, smh.

it's called a Patagonian toothfish and the name change happened in the 1970s because they couldn't sell it anywhere

By 1995 it was all over Los Angeles. We sold tons and it wasn't cheap but people loved it. Rightly so as cooked properly it's delicious.
