Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja (Biography and Mountaineering Records) Nirmal “Nims” Purja, widely known as Nimsdai, was a Nepalese mountaineer and former British Special Forces soldier who became one of the most celebrated high-altitude climbers of his generation. He gained worldwide recognition for completing the 14 highest mountains in the world, all above 8,000 metres, in just 6 months and 6 days (189 days) in 2019—an achievement known as Project Possible. His record-breaking style, determination and ability to operate at extreme altitude transformed expectations about how quickly the world's highest mountains could be climbed. He later became part of the historic Nepali team that made the first-ever winter ascent of K2, the world's second-highest mountain, on 16 January 2021. He also established numerous speed records on the world's highest peaks and received the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his achievements in extreme mountaineering. Note: Nirmal Purja was confirmed among the climbers killed in the Broad Peak avalanche in Pakistan in July 2026, bringing the life of one of modern mountaineering's most extraordinary figures to a tragic end. What we know about his Broad Peak plan Broad Peak was not originally the main objective of his 2026 expedition. National Geographic reports that Purja described it as a “late addition” to his expedition. He had a very specific personal objective: a Broad Peak summit would put him one mountain away from becoming the first person to climb all 14 eight-thousanders twice without supplemental oxygen. That is important because Broad Peak was not simply another commercial expedition for him. It was part of a larger record attempt. He also appeared to understand the danger. Shortly before the climb, he wrote: (Broad Peak, I ask for nothing but safe passage up and back down.) He also said that he took no mountain for granted and that from the moment he left base camp, he was giving it his full commitment. The weather situation is particularly troubling According to National Geographic's reconstruction, conditions on Broad Peak had initially been considered relatively favorable. But heavy snowfall began around July 22. An experienced climber, David Klein, had already reached very high on the mountain on July 19, turning around only roughly 50–70 vertical metres below the summit. But after the snowfall began, he decided not to make another attempt. Klein explained the problem very clearly: after heavy snowfall, climbers don't simply need a period of good weather. They need several days without additional snow, allowing the new snow either to stabilize and bond with the mountain or to slide away. And this is exactly what makes the decision surrounding Purja's expedition so difficult to understand. By July 25, most of the teams at Broad Peak Base Camp had already left. Klein and Overton left as well. Yet Purja's Elite Exped team and a few others remained with hopes of making the summit. So why didn't Nimsdai cancel? 1. His objective was extremely important. Broad Peak was a late addition specifically because it was part of his attempt to become the first person to complete two oxygen-free ascents of all 14 eight-thousanders. 2. Conditions can change rapidly in the Karakoram. A dangerous forecast doesn't automatically mean that a summit attempt will be abandoned. Experienced teams sometimes wait for a weather window.
