Crazy story for you… I am not religious but I appreciate spiritual people. I once met a pastor and started asking with honest curiosity about god and the Bible. The dude told me the craziest thing.. it was along the lines of “kid, these are just stories to help people out”.

It’s hard for them to hear this truth because they’ve put all their chips in those baskets. They’ve chosen to empower evil while being told they’re the good guys. To deal with the difficulty it would take to make up for the harm they’ve caused would be too hard for them and their egos.

I’m not an expert, but I’m suspicious about your statement about the early church fathers being so influenced by Platonism. True, early church fathers might have been influenced by platonism to a degree, but they were so anti pagan that I don’t really believe platonism had such a powerful influence on them. I’d say they were probably more influenced by Philo, who was influenced by Platonism. Early church fathers also resisted Gnosticism, which is a version of panentheism. Not sure I buy your argument.

i grew up southern baptist but when i got older i quickly realized that a lot of the things i was learning didn't make sense. it caused me to leave the church and stop following christianity. however this way of thinking makes me understand the christian philosophies way better than 15 years of sunday school

Great video! David Bentley Hart has a wonderful essay entitled “The Hidden and the Manifest” that goes in depth about how the father of Nicaea through through a Christian understanding of God, and how this new “Christian narrative of Being” changed the western world (would be nice to read in this 1700th anniversary of the Council). Great read!

I am all for this! My concern is that the words have always been interpreted by man, and all of mankind is flawed - it’s a core trait of our species. And I’ve seen too many times to count where the power of that relationship has lead to manipulation. So I’ve taken to saying my relationship with god is my own and have left it at that for a long time now. The idea that you are either too ignorant and unworthy to have any connection without the guidance and shaping of an organization, has always confused and concerned me.

That’s the ANSOLUTE truth. I worked at a Navy Chaplain’s office for five years, with both Jewish & Christian chaplains. They’re HUMANS! They have doubts, disbeliefs, questions, etc. Just like us.

Proving your worth to God seems to have arisen with Protestantism, as you suggest, in the late Medieval period. I suppose in some ways this belief would have upturned the traditional social classes.

Anything we affirm about God analogically, we must deny univocally. The language we use to describe God is limited.. but not equivocal. John Calvin says “when God speaks to us.. he lisps.”

I was a die hard Christian until I studied theology my senior yr of college. My professor at the time told the class mid semester that he was an atheist. I know many preachers that do some shady stuff and now believe that they too are nonbelievers as well.
