My heart has shattered about 100 times since last Wednesday’s events. Then a few days ago someone mentioned their kids not having light up shoes because it might alert a school intruder to where they are during a lock down. And all I could think was, “Okay, but my child’s head literally blinks.” The equipment that gives him access to hear, to follow instructions in a dark room, blinks rapidly and brightly. The alternative? Him not being able to hear or see someone signing in a dark room. And that scenario is likely to make him even more loud as he often can’t perceive his own volume without his implants on. My heart shattered a little more with those realizations. Since last week, Coop and I have had a few variations of this conversation. Each time I don’t feel like I’ve said enough. But I’m also terrified of saying too much. How do we have these conversations? How do we prepare them for emergencies and potential reality while still protecting their innocence and perception of humankind? I told my family yesterday that sending my baby into the world each day is a constant battle between fear and faith. That with him in school, every time I hear a siren outside my office, blocks from him, my heart will sink. It shouldn’t be this way. It doesn’t have to be this way.
