Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is a withdrawal syndrome seen in newborns exposed to opioids in utero. It results from abrupt cessation of intrauterine drug exposure after delivery. 📌 Clinical features often appear within 24–72 hours and include: • Tremors, irritability, high-pitched cry • Poor feeding, vomiting, diarrhea • Autonomic dysfunction (sweating, fever, sneezing, yawning) • In severe cases: seizures and failure to thrive 📌 Diagnosis is clinical, often supported by scoring systems such as the Finnegan Neonatal Abstinence Scoring System (FNASS) or newer Eat, Sleep, Console (ESC) approaches. 📌 Management: • First-line: supportive care (swaddling, low-stimulation environment, frequent feeds, skin-to-skin) • Pharmacologic therapy (morphine, methadone, buprenorphine) is considered for moderate–severe cases. 💡 Early identification and a multidisciplinary approach are essential to optimize outcomes for both infant and family. #NeonatalAbstinenceSyndrome #Pediatrics #Neonatology #MedicalEducation
