If you said a “cherry eye,” then you’re half right. This is eversion of the third eyelid cartilage resulting in a partial prolapse of the third eyelid gland. The gland is intimately associated with the base of the this eyelid cartilage, so the gland will pop up when the third eyelid cartilage is everted significantly. I’ve seen this a couple times now in cats that appear to have a straightforward “cherry eye.” However, once you manipulate the third eyelid, you can tell the “red cherry” isn’t a gland, but actually a folded third eyelid. This can happen in dogs as well. Find the leading edge of the third eyelid and see if it’s folded over or just pushed out of the way. For everted cartilage cases, I will remove the most bent part of the cartilage and then imbricate the posterior epithelium to restore some structure to the third eyelid. In huge third eyelids (like a Great Dane), I’ve even tried suturing the cartilage back together. Cats can also get normal “cherry eyes”, too, especially the Burmese and Bombay breeds. #veterinarian #veterinary #ophthalmology #cats #catsofinstagram
