gentrification is soft code for colonialization. It started in the black neighborhoods in the USA, then they moved abroad when it got to expensive there too. It's sad.

This is why I don’t believe in “digital nomads”. It’s simple exploitation. A person on here got mad at me for pointing out that being a “digital nomad” in Thailand would contribute to displacing local people and gentrification 🙄

thank you! I’m mexican, and I’m happy are talking about this. Yes, we shouldn’t need gentrification to have safe and clean neighborhoods, but sadly, the government and authorities only take care of people from high economic statuses and foreigners.

I agree, learning Spanish is quite easy for English speakers. Even just watching a Spanish tv show with subtitles teaches a lot. And going to an area to interact with the locals is key too.

Gentrification is not the same as colonization and it diminishes the social class issues at heart. The Williamsburg NYC revival in the 2000s for instance was gentrification. This is pure colonial tourism

I actually think the whole English thing is kinda wild because every major city has some things in English. These neighborhoods have also been for wealthier people (locals) so the argument really needs to be with gov and landlords

Gentrification happens when locals start chasing foreign dollars… pricing homes, land, or services higher than what their own people can afford. It’s a commerce issue. It’s about who’s willing to sell their neighborhood for a payday and who ends up priced out because of it. Even when Mexicans return to live in Mexico many of whom have spent decades earning U.S. dollars, they impact local markets just like expats and tourists. Because at the end of the day, It’s about the strength of your wallet.
