“you don’t see with your eyes, you see with your brain” — Eyes are the lens with which the brain interprets what it has seen. The brain is also quite unreliable and “fills in” the bits our eyes haven’t caught based on its memory and ultimately best guess. That’s how we “feel” we saw something that isn’t there.
