There’s been a heated debate around Imam Abdul Kareem Kuyateh the young imam who sparked controversy after openly declaring that the annual Magal of Touba is haram. In one of his recent sermons, he boldly told his congregation that “Magal Touba is not part of Islam, and anyone who goes there and dies will end up in hell.” He even went as far as saying that people who spend their nights in nightclubs are “better off” than those who travel to Touba for the Magal. As expected, this statement didn’t sit well. The Gambian government quickly issued an apology to the Mouride community, while the Mourides themselves filed a complaint to the police, describing his remarks as deeply offensive and disrespectful to their faith. But interestingly, Imam Abdul Kareem is not standing alone. Members of the Senegalese movement Team Ibadu Rahman have come forward in his defense, urging him not to apologize for his stance. Now the big question is: was Imam Abdul Kareem right to say this publicly, or did he go too far? #gambia#senegal#touba#religion#state
