Why would they export the rice at a lower price while having a shortage? Also I doubt the farmers laughed on their way to the bank lol they would’ve had to raise prices to make up for their crop losses resulting in either no change to their overall income, or even a loss

I was shocked with the price of rice when I moved to Japan from the Philippines. 5kg of a decent quality rice in the Philippines costs less than 1,000 yen. 😭

Oh that’s why when I come to Japan recently, I’m shocked when I see the price of the rice at the supermarket. Because rice is majority of Asian staple food. And I really thought it was normal price in Japan. So thanks for the explanation

Japan grows only 38% of its food (based on calorie intake). One of the lowest % in the world. So global markets are incredibly important here and its less about domestic policy but global trading capabilities.

isn't it in every country? the best product goes for export while the citizens are left with everything that wasn't perfect enough. Jokes aside these products are more expensive for the citizens despite them being much lower quality.
