Also the in-fighting b/w East AAs and Southeast AAs. SEA AAs raised by refugee or immigrant poor parents alongside other poor POC groups are way more aware and active politically. Viets, Filipinos, Lao, Cambodian, Thai.

Yes I agree. I feel like a lot of Asian Americans from working class/low income families are less like this though.

I studied this in my Asian American lit class! I recommend looking up racial triangulation theory - it talks about some of the things you cover, positing that AA are both valorized as the model minority while simultaneously facing alienation and being cast as foreigners - essentially, that the racial hierarchy in America is not linear, but is triangular/multi-dimensional - which can help explain AA's seeming "apoliticism" in America. Just an interesting way of understanding how and why Asian Americans are racialized the way we are. 🙃

thissss - the only time they’d speak up was for #stopasianhate and in the same breath wonder why asian hate isn’t taken as seriously (re: the reactions from Cierra from Love Island) … the cognitive dissonance is staggering

Asian american from Boston here. Sometimes its easier to stay in a bubble than to try and make a difference. If you are so woke and “attached” to what’s really going on there, what are you doing about it. Just curious.

I agree. Most asian households prioritize getting money, etc. I'm looking at my other POC peers and how outspoken they are when it comes to politics. As much as I would like to try to be like them, I don't even know where to begin bc it's just something that is not talked about often in our community.

It’s simple: Confucian upbringings have held Asians in the west down 👈 once you understand this, every thing makes sense, since Confucian traditions are INCOMPATIBLE with western individualism where being loud, ASSERTIVE, and proud leds to success. Tiger parenting needs to modernize and reject confucians’ filial piety, saving face culture, shame culture, honne/tatemae, etc —- because all that does is create low self-esteem, low confidence, silence and passive asians in the west that get out compete by louder whites, blacks, hispanics.

THIS! Also like why bring up “stop Asian hate” when literally you’ve never done anything to defend any other group?!?

Yes cognitive dissonance and disassociative disorder are real issues in the Asian community. Purposeful apathy is a great phrase that you should copyright ❤️🔥👏🏿

"White-collar jobs" well there's your problem lol, the sample size is PMC/petite bourgeois. Throughout the history of America and really throughout the post-industrial world, almost no one within the PMC-class cares about those issues because their wealth separates them from the working class.

It’s about money everything is about money. The job the status everything at the end is money. Selfish world we live in and people really care only about themselves and their own interests.

Personally we will support other groups when other POC support us too. The reactions about the girl from Love Island. Asians themselves need to support other Asians too! It’s a little bit of internal racism I fear
