They shouldn't host if they can't afford to take them on trips. Either don't host or don't book trips. This seems like poor taste.

but I thought they are supposed to be part of the family and contribute to chores, spend time etc so any trips planned from the time they are hosting should include the exchange student

We hosted one year. The exchange student was treated like the other kids. When we go out or go on vacation I certainly don't ask my other kids to pay for anything other than their own personal souvenirs. I would have never thought to ask an exchange student to pay.

We are going on 2 trips. One is family and other is something we planned on. My student is coming and her parents paid for her airfare. We are covering food, house we rented and most activities. Just one we said she can go if parents to agree. Whale watching. We are paying for most of all other activities. Football game Seattle Seahawks . My favorite football team and a soccer game.

Why book the trip then? I can't think you can be a good host if you can't even preplan your holiday trips.
