Paint the bucket black. The algae needs light. I personally use the blue water storage containers for outdoor watered.

I use a small piece of copper in mine for a couple years now. No issues with health, no issues with algae either.

If you aren’t testing your water then they may already be getting heavy metals… I personally think copper is the better option after doing research. Especially because I change my chickens water 2-3 times per day. 😊

I use an igloo cooler with a spout adapter. No alge ever and keeps the water fresh and cool all year long

Maybe you could paint the buckets to prevent light from getting in which causes the algae growth. I personally use a cooler for my chickens waterer because it stays cool in this TX heat.

Your water can be sitting in copper pipes for more than 24 hours before filling your chickens water container. So copper is a concern and you have copper pipes then let the water run for a while before filling the water container.

You can get refillable waterers that attach to the hose so it’s always moving

you should still change out your water with fresh water every day or other day so the chance the water is going to hurt the water is likely none. id think the bacteria coming off the algae would affect them worse

I like to use apple cider vinegar. Helps prevent parasites and there’s no algae in the water! Much safer alternative.
