@myteacherface: What can you do when a student is failing, no one at home is willing to help, and the kid sees no future? There are lots of “official” routes to take with counselors, admin, SAC, CST, etc, but sometimes a person-to-person approach is a good start. 🤓 #Myteacherface #teacher #teacherlife #funnyteacher #teachercomedy #teachers #teachersoftiktok #tiktokteachers #teaching #TikTokLearningCampaign

That was the part of teaching that I loved…making kids feel seen, heard, and that their life matters to the world. 💜

I have found there are very few parents who don’t care. They may be overwhelmed, at a lost as to what to do, or ‘caring’ looks different.

Have you ever considered running for office? I would encourage you to consider the idea. Whatever community you live in would be so lucky to have you involved in whatever capacity you can. The world needs you. 👍🏻

In my high school career, no one had this type of conversation with me. Granted, I was semi-above-average in terms of grades. Not top 10 of my class by any means, but I think my GPA was 3.57 when I graduated. So I can definitely see why I wouldn't have really popped up on anyone's radar to have this conversation with. But as a 34 year old high school graduate and two-time college dropout, I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up 😅. My parents weren't strict on being the best, just making sure I did my best. Makes me wonder if someone had had this type of conversation with me, if my life would be different, instead of being told "you're going to do great things". Then again, as my therapist has reminded me, everyone has different definitions of what greatness is.

I had that with a kid. her friend brought her to me as she knew I'd be able to help her. we can be protective factors.

I was that kid and I will never forget the teachers and safe adults that cared.

I’ve had multiple parents say to me. They’re your problem when they’re in school. What do you want me to do about it?

I had the opposite issue. I tried desperately for years to get the school to help and got nowhere.

Yes! They need another adult to show them differently and help them develop intrinsic motivation to break free from their situation

I teach 7th grade. Kids can’t see past tomorrow and parents don’t care. Any advice?

I turn in the “undones” for late work without keeping the copy I’m supposed to keep to communicate to teachers that I DONT WANT to have to care… I wish they had more steps to give students opportunity for accountability. My kids aren’t scared to call me about detentions (for missed work/signatures) because again- I don’t care. As long as they are trying and their behavior is respectful, I… will help them, but I don’t care the way some parents do.

That happens a lot…. In my experience so far the best way to counter that is build a strong rapport with that student. Your method is one I’ve used before. Great idea
