My nana remembers the day she wore pants to her deep south Mississippi church, for the first time. They were yellow trousers. She was the first woman in her community to do it. She said everyone tried to make a big deal out of it but when they’d attempted to confront her she scolded them for thinking about her pants and not Jesus while at church. Everyone left her alone after that. I asked her what made her want to take a stand like that and she said “I just felt like wearing pants that day, so I did.”

My grandma went to a school run by nuns and was sent home one day cause she dared to wear pants that had the zipper on the front instead of on the side. They were worried it would accidentally open and reveal “shameful sights!” Needless to say it became her favourite pair of pants to wear lol

Fun Fact: Marlene Dietrich was allegedly arrested for wearing trousers in 1933, France. Women have been wearing trousers (more specifically pantaloons and bloomers from 1850s) for a lot longer than people expect…and that’s not even getting into the women who cross-dressed through the centuries and women within different, more androgynous cultures where such fashions were more acceptable.
