A lot of the ppl who show up now to the Westin afters aren’t even anime fans. It’s just randos that come to stir up shit. I didn’t go to last years but I’ve heard ppl say it gave frat vibes. Like who’s inviting them and how do they seem to come every year now???

2024 almost everyone than came up to talk to me didn’t attend AX, and didn’t even watch anime. One said to me “we’re just here to party and meet drunk cosplay girl”. Which sure. But the vibe used to be fans and those in the community.

I’ve been seeing an influx of normies attending cons just to prowl around. This is why I NEVER let my friends out of my sight. Oh, you’re going to the bathroom? Me too babes. Buddy system everywhere at cons.

this year i kid you not, 3 minutes in, a dude ran to me and asked if i wanted to “roblox dance” with 200$ and a ziplock of ❄️. super touchy guy who wouldn’t take no for an answer and it was p scary

even at the on-site after hours events, you are not safe. i was roofied at lounge 21 this year (thankfully i was not there alone and made it back to my hotel safely) but it terrified me and soured my experience so much that i never want to go to another convention afterparty. youre exactly right—might as well be at a frat house.

I had a lot of fun the three nights I was at the mahjong party this year. Chill vibes, free drinks, mahjong, lotta karaoke and a lot of subculture people hanging around having fun.

Me and my group of friends were right in front of the guy last year when he started swinging, and my friend had to literally pull me out of the way to avoid the guy crashing into me 😢 then i had to deal with two 🍃 dudes who wouldnt stop bothering me but had never watched anime??

I feel like this has happen almost every year at AX for years now, just a little more discreet and not with the huge attendance count it has now. I remember one year, when AX was in Anaheim, a bunch of people bought airsoft guns and fired them into the street from the hotel balconies.

All of these stories of creeps at conventions and in spaces where it’s an environment for people interested in anime and comics don’t seem to stop being prevalent at the big conventions

That’s so crazy. I’m not familiar with ax, I used to go to animenext and animenyc on the east coast but that was last in 2019, I haven’t been since and that’s so crazy to hear. Like I’m sure there was some bad stuff going on at the afterparties back then but the stuff like that is insane. The most that hspprnrd back then was the fire alarm gets pulled or the dance floor broke cause everyone was jumping too much

I’m in the background of knowing the communities we are talking about these women. And the way they spin it is that they made the whole party go wrong because they offered some services they shouldn’t have. I don’t know anything about it. I just know that they’re spreading information and they’re stating that they’re going on people servers and taking information like their pictures.
